The Multidisciplinary Research Building 1 (MRB1) on the University of California, Riverside campus defines the gateway to a cross disciplinary research hub for Life/Chemical Sciences, Medicine, and Engineering.
This five-story building houses over 40 Principal Investigators in 4 floors of open collaborative laboratories over a vivarium. To promote cross-team interaction a 4-story open atrium and communicating stair connects the computational laboratories. Fulfilling the vision of this building as a multidisciplinary space the planning and design of the building centers around the gathering and interaction spaces.
A variety of collaboration zones are placed strategically throughout the computational zone to promote travel, communication and scholarly activity. Additional amenities are cleverly grouped along the length of a four-story open atrium, allowing for the often-unseen parts of scientific research to be visible and accessible.
